Adults in the room': Greens surge across Europe as centre-left flounders

Movement increasingly appeals to voters frustrated with traditional mainstream parties

 European affairs correspondent

Fri 19 Oct 2018

In conservative Bavaria, Greens doubled their vote in state elections to become the second largest party. In local elections in Belgium, record scores of more than 30% won them several Brussels districts and left them runners-up overall. In Luxembourg, they increased their tally of MPs by 50%.

With Midterms Approaching, the Recount Fight Continues for Elections We Can Trustw

From the start, the 2016 Presidential recount was not simply a call to retabulate the vote. It was a demand for elections we can trust, that are accurate, secure and just, and free from the scourge of Jim Crow. While there’s been progress since then towards greater cybersecurity, our votes remain vulnerable to a spectrum of cyber threats. But that’s not all. On multiple fronts, our right to vote itself is under attack, along with other basic rights at the foundation of our democracy, including our rights of protest, privacy, freedom of the press and more. With democracy increasingly under fire, trustworthy elections are more critical than ever. For all these reasons, the recount fight continues as a battle for election protection and voting justice, a fight being waged in both the court of law and the court of public opinion.

The Green Party of Pennsylvania is celebrating several election victories for 2017. Out of ten candidates running, six were elected to office. Jules Mermelstein, statewide candidate for PA Superior Court Judge was not one of those elected.  However his strong showing was a victory in its own right, ensuring minor party status for the Green Party of Pennsylvania for two more years.

Jules’s campaign achieved over 9% statewide and over 10% in 15 Counties; Jules’s campaign for Superior Court Judge was a victory for PA Greens

Nate Craig received an outstanding 10.3% of the vote in the race for Phoenixville Mayor in Chester County, giving encouragement to future Green candidates throughout PA.
